Website templates, or themes, are these rare phenoms that benefit both first-time site owners and experienced developers — giving them each the opportunity to save time, money, and headaches on website design. It’s true! While my mother loves the idea of being able to point and click to try out color schemes and slider photos, my freelance dev friends love that they don’t have to start from scratch each time a client requests a new site design.
Quality WordPress themes are designed to make people’s lives easier, but for some, the trickiest part is getting them installed and operational. Here, we’ll cover the different avenues for installing a theme for your newest web project. Read more here.
Understanding WordPress Themes
Before taking a look at how to install WordPress themes, let’s define what a WordPress theme should be. I distinguish this from what a WordPress theme is because you’re often going to find themes that do more than they should. These themes make it hard to try out a different theme should you choose to change your theme’s design.
Fundamentally, the WordPress Theme system is a way to “skin” your weblog. Yet, it is more than just a “skin.” Skinning your site implies that only the design is changed. WordPress Themes can provide much more control over the look and presentation of the material on your website. Read more here.
Download the WordPress theme from ThemeForest
After you download the .zip package from ThemeForest, unzip it. You’ll see a file .zip, which is the main theme file that needs to be uploaded and installed. The filename is usually the theme name, for example: if the theme is TheM, then the file name is them.zip, NOISE – noise.zip, etc. But sometimes, the file name is different but not too much and you can guess the file name from the theme name. Here at FitWP, we always name the .zip file the same as the theme name. Read more here.
Important: If you get a message that says Error: missing style.css stylesheet, then you must open the theme package you just tried to upload and install the theme .zip file inside of the package.
Download and unzip the theme package (Note: Some browsers such as Safari will also unzip the contents when you download them, so you must rezip the theme folder in order to upload the theme via WordPress uploader.)
– Log in to your WordPress Dashboard (i.e.: examplesite.com/wp-admin)
– Click on Appearance > Themes
– On the Themes page, click the Add New button on the top of the page
– Click the Upload Theme button
– Choose the [themename].zip from your theme package download.
– Press the Install Now button
– Back on the Themes page, click on Activate
